What makes art, art?
Art is a creative endeavour, creating a visual object to be enjoyed… evoking emotion and often telling a story.
Art is subjective and contextual, where each audience member offers a unique interpretation. Art can have styles or conventions and is regularly judged by skill application. But both a toddler and a Master of Fine Art both make art. Art is art. It is human expression, esteemed across cultures and class.
Memes are no different. They are art. Memes are cultural, social or political expressions much like other art forms. Think of street art and pop art – highly accessible and often challenge social and political discourses.
Memes are silly but can also be powerful. We cannot underestimate their effect on social discourse and how the meme content today can tell us a lot about ourselves – much like we reflect on other eras and mediums of art.
Artsper Magazine gives a great extended explanation in their blog post. Check it out.
